How to Make the Bulletin Board for Your Company More Attractive

The old-school bulletin board is making a comeback. Today, your employees are likely inundated by electronic communication, such as email. While efforts to distribute corporate communications electronically are admirable, the information is often buried in the “I’ll read it later” folder. A tactile and visual bulletin board placed in a common area can get their attention in a way that an electronic memo may not. Keep your bulletin board dynamic and eye-catching, and your return will be in informed employees.

  1. Recruit someone on your creative team to design and maintain your bulletin board. If you’re a small business that outsources marketing, ask one of your employees who has a keen eye for presentation and details to take ownership of your bulletin board.
  2. List your bulletin board needs. You may find you require more than one bulletin board — one for human resources and compliance, another for corporate communications and another for company culture, such as upcoming events or a space for employees to post information.
  3. Plan your space. Review the needs you listed, and evaluate how many bulletin boards in what sizes are necessary. Tour your facility and pinpoint high-traffic employee areas that will accommodate your bulletin board(s). You may find you want to put certain bulletin boards in specific areas rather than one designated area.
  4. Choose a theme for your bulletin board. A go-to theme is one in keeping with your company branding; think of it like a page on your website, including navigation. Use your corporate colors and design elements, such as curved rather than straight edges, to design and delineate the contents of your bulletin board.
  5. Select materials in keeping with your theme. Choose paper in your dominant color for the background and staple to your bulletin board. Cut paper in complementary corporate colors in 1-inch streams the height or length of your bulletin board to border content areas. Choose another color as a background for topic headings.
  6. Attach paper content to your bulletin board at all four corners; this prevents mismatched shifting or rippling papers, which contribute to an unorganized and messy board.
  7. Keep your bulletin board dynamic. Update information consistently, and keep your theme fresh; for instance, consider a seasonal theme – especially one in which you can also incorporate your branding.
